X-News Week #41 (July 30th-August 5th, 2018)

North America

  • EVO has a new winner this year, RenoMD Dictator. Although he has been playing online for a few years, this was his second offline tournament and this time he had to do it on a big stage like EVO. In order to get the victory he had to beat Tomo (not Ohira) Ryu and the legend John Choi who ended up in third place. Both opponents are specialists in their characters with matchups that are favorable against Dictator. RenoMD is now qualified for Tournament of Legends III as well. Pools stream [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] | Top 24 stream | Top 8 and finals | Twitch clips | Brackets
  • Monday Night Fightcade had Scuzbucket ChunLi as the eighth person to earn a spot in the final top 8 of the Tournament of Legends III online qualifier. Ganelon Claw is also selected for the top 8 replacing RenoMD who got his spot at EVO. Bracket | Video. Remember that the top 8 finals will happen this coming Monday at 7pm on Arkadeum channel.
  • The information at Twin Galaxies website last week had the error of saying that Alex Valle and John Choi exhibition would be a HF game. In the end, it was actually an ST exhibition, just after Alpha 2 and Alpha 3. James Chen gives some old school stories in the commentary. Alex Valle states in the final interview that his best memories of the last 25 years was “his meeting with Mike Watson, his meeting with John Choi, his meeting with Daigo Umehara and his meeting with Justin Wong“. Video
  • For those in Ohio, Ground Zero: Second Impact event will take place with an ST tournament included. It will be on August 18. Registration | Stream
  • Wisconsin will be holding an ST tournament as part of the Paradigm Grand Prix event on August 25. Registration

Japan

  • The classic 3vs3 major in Japan, called X-EST, is going to take place this weekend. Most of the Japanese grandmasters will be competing there. Expect 7 or 8 straight hours of stream so calculate your ways to make it convenient to watch as much as possible. The starting time will be 2pm (Saturday in Japan) or 10pm (Friday in California) or 7am (Saturday in Europe). The venue is Akihabara e-sports square. Team list and brackets | Stream | Website
  • Anyone who has travelled to a Japanese major knows it’s very hard to stay so many long hours in the tournament. But Japanese players can handle that and much more. They will be organizing both a pre-event and a post-event of the main tournament. The pre-event will be a special evening at Daytona Shiki arcade at 8pm (Friday – Japan), 4am (Thursday – California), 1pm (Friday – Europe) and will be streamed at Daytona channel. The post-event will be at Ooyama Newton arcade at 2pm (Sunday – Japan), 10pm (Saturday – California), 7am (Sunday – Europe), unfortunately, there will be no stream for the post event.
  • Last set of casuals from Mat Mouse arcade (Kanto) which closed its doors recently. The most known names of this set are yaya, PECO, ShiroSashishi, Kameraya, Kotaka Shoten and Komoda Blanka.
  • FT10 set at Gamespot Versus (Kanto) between Suzuki Zangief and Kawamata Ryu. Recommended if you want to watch a lot of footsies. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • Suzuki Zangief also had another set, this time a long series (without counting), against Fukuyama Ryu. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • Gamespot Versus weekly team tournament (Kanto). GM Dictator and Kawamata Ryu were the team captain. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • North vs South weekly team tournament from the HL-SEGA arcade (Kansai). With Hazi DJ, Nakano Sagat, KKY, Mori Boxer, Shogatsu and Kusumondo among many others. No annotations in the video description but Shogatsu put the player names on screen both in Japanese and English.
  • Gamespot Versus special weekend tournament (Kanto). It’s not clear what format they are following this time but you will be able to enjoy amazing performances from Grygla Feilong and Kurahashi Ryu. The final exhibition between Kurahashi and Yakitori Hawk is pretty epic. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • Monthly tournaments at Amipara Technoland (Chugoku) in the very west of Japan. They posted both June and July editions as well as the East vs West special from July. In June, they received the visit of Tokyo players like Kawamata and Shu and in July they received the visit of Shogatsu. [source: Amipara nico channel]
  • Playland F1R 2on2 tournament (Tohoku). From the remote arcade in the very far north of Japan. They posted 3 events. Unlike other weeks the third event is fully annotated in the description [event 1, event 2, event 3]. [source: Playland twitch channel]

Europe

  • The fourth Tournament of Legends III European qualifier is happening this weekend in France. There will be a special pre evening event on Saturday at 8.30pm and the main event on Sunday at 1pm. Both of them streamed on the First Attack twitch channel. Some of the top players will be Dav35 ChunLi, wolmar Dhalsim, Bazoukha Boxer, Soon Claw, Nayma Honda, Pijo80 Feilong and Pe1port among many others.

Others

  • TZW is a known Japanese player that has been doing combo videos (manually in the arcade!) since the very early days. The last iteration of his videos was a DVD that he created in 2007 called “MAXION rev. B”. He has been posting the footage of this DVD on his youtube channel with few new chapters every few months. This time he posted Zangief, Blanka and Honda chapters.
  • For fans of trivia or records of the game, there have been a couple of videos posted with KO at 93 seconds (video 1, video 2). Both of them are done on training mode. Rounds that fast haven’t been seen in actual competition, just some 92 ones.

X-News Week #40 (July 23rd-29th, 2018)

North America

  • EVO is already here and ST will be present, as always. There are 90+ players registered. Registration is already closed although you can do it on site but at a much higher price. The tournament is on Friday at 2pm. Top 8 finals is on Saturday at 1pm on the official EVO side stage. It will all be streamed on Atari FGC channel. This tournament is also a Tournament of Legends III qualifier. Brackets
  • 2 Old 2 Furious tournament from last weekend had Marsgatti Guile and RenoMD Dictator as finalists. RenoMD had been playing online for the longest and this was his first offline tournament. He played both on pad and stick and he performed extremely well on both up until the final where Marsgatti got his qualifier spot for the Tournament of Legends III. A lot of other top players and quality matches can be seen in the stream. Stream | Bracket
  • Monday Night Fightcade had Marsgatti Guile as the seventh person to earn a spot in the final top 8 of the Tournament of Legends III online qualifier. However, since Marsgatti qualified few days later in the offline 2 Old 2 Furious tournament in New York, the 2nd place will take his spot for the top 8, in this case, Hokuto Claw. Bracket | Video.
  • Kumite in Texas/Low Tier city event took place last weekend with a final between Jumpsuit, who used Zangief in the final, and Sean Boxer. Both of them went to the very last round to decide the victory. Pools Video | Top 8 stream | Bracket
  • Footage from last week ToL3 qualifier at Don’s Arcade has now been posted on youtube, just in case someone prefers to watch it there instead of twitch. Video
  • Both TFC (registration link) and SummerJam (registration link) are Tournament of Legends III qualifiers that will take place in the East Coast in September. You might be late for the TFC pre-registration to get a lower price but you are still on time to pre-register for SummerJam which ends in 2 weeks.
  • Bonus 1: We only post news related to ST but last weekend many ST players went to Super Arcade to play an HF tournament so eltrouble, Millertime, Tomo (not Ohira but the Japanese Ryu living in LA for a year) and many others were present. The final was between Mike Watson and OG Ken. Stream | Bracket. Speaking of HF, Twin Galaxies is organizing a special exhibition between Alex Valle and John Choi who will face each other in HF at some point of the event. It will be on Saturday night right next to the EVO venue and streamed on TG channel, commented by James Chen.
  • Bonus 2: From South America, the “Super Turbo Argentina” group continues being very active and they posted the footage of their last 2 online tournaments (week 1, week 2). They also announced the rules for the upcoming ones and even an offline tournament. You can check more details if you are from the area. Group info

Japan

  • The classic 3vs3 major in Japan, called X-EST, is just two weekends away. They even created a cool trailer (in English!) for the tournament which has 43 teams registered already. Mark it in your calendars, August 11 @ Akihabara e-sports SQUARE. It will be streamed on Game Newton channel. Official Site
  • Tokyo is not the only place in Japan with annual events. Space Shuttle in Nagoya (land of MAO, Superstar, Futachan and others) also organizes 3vs3 and other special events. Last weekend they run the 3rd Young Tiger Cup. The special feature of this tournament is that the only players allowed to participate are those who have never won a major before (similar to the X-er tournament in Tokyo). The tournament can be seen in 3 parts (part 1, part 2, part 3). [source: MAO’s nico channel]
  • After the 3rd Young Tiger Cup, all the usual players did a special East vs West event format as they used to do every week on Fridays (not anymore). For this team tournament, Opemai Claw and Yondaime Old Sagat played as team captains. There are up to 6 Claws in one of the teams and that’s not counting MAO who is playing in the opposite team. Nagoya (Chubu) is known for having most of the top Claws in the scene, as this event proves. [source: MAO’s nico channel]
  • As we announced in previous weeks, Mat Mouse already closed its doors but there are some final videos being edited and uploaded. This time it’s a set of casuals that many known players didn’t want to miss: TZW Guile, Mattsun Ken, Shu Ken, Soiya Ken, Kote Sagat, Sashishi Ryu, Munari Sagat, Hebimetako Cammy and Hanamaruki Ryu. Video
  • Yuuvega Dictator had a couple of FT4 a few weeks ago after the main event they do every week at Game Daytona Shiki arcade. The first one is against Kuregin Dhalsim (video) and the second one against Gucchi Ryu (video). [source: Daytona twitch channel]
  • Gamespot Versus weekly team tournament (Kanto). Kotaka Shoten Guile and Kawasim Dhalsim were the team captains. Really good performances from Tensai Chinpanji Fei and Komoda Blanka. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • North vs South weekly tournament from the HL-SEGA arcade (Kansai). Shogatsu and Kusumondo were the team captains. No annotations.
  • Game Newton Ooyama team tournament (Kanto). They did an East vs West format but giving each player two chances instead of one. An outstanding performance from Munari New Sagat. Him and VIPER Hawk played the decisive match for the team victory. [source: Ooyama nico channel]
  • Game Daytona Shiki weekly tournament (Kanto). With their usual “winner stays on” format. There are always 2 laps. This week’s final is between Sakamoto Old ChunLi and Seo Dictator. [source: Daytona twitch channel]
  • Special East vs West tournament format at Amipara Technoland (Chugoku). They always do this format just after their usual monthly regular tournament. For some reason, they are posting both May and June editions now. June edition had the visit of players from Kanto and Chubu, like Shu Ken, Kawamata Ryu, Keishin ChunLi, Edo ChunLi, Wani!K Honda, etc. We linked the videos of the original source and added player names in English as the first video comment.
  • Playland F1R 2on2 tournament (Tohoku). From the remote arcade in the very far north of Japan, unfortunately with no annotations. [source: Playland twitch channel]

Europe

  • The fourth Tournament of Legends III European qualifier is getting closer and closer. It will take place the weekend after EVO and there are top European players already registered for it. Enter the ToL will happen in Morlaix, France. Registration
  • The finalists of the previous qualifier, Biollo and Spinalblood (both of them from Italy) did a Kumite that has been now posted to youtube. Spinalblood is a very particular case as there are almost no other New Sagat specialists outside of Japan. Spinalblood kumite | Biollo kumite
  • LaDOSE posted the footage of their last ranking battle which they do monthly in Lyon. The finals were between ISIMORN Claw and GxC Mitsu Old Sagat. Video | Brackets | Blog post
  • The footage from the VSFighting tournament of last week has been fully annotated and uploaded to youtube which is much better than watching it from the stream archive on twitch. Video playlist | Bracket
  • The Spanish community run their monthly event. The final was between Rocco Zangief and pof Boxer. Top 3 video | Bracket. By the end of the year there will be a final tournament with the top 8 of the ranked players.
  • There are several events all over the world to gather and watch EVO on stream. One of them is in the UK and they are planning to show the ST stream. Located in Sheffield check the event details if it’s near you.

Others

  • Arcadeshock continues with their special gear but this time paying homage to ST, or more specifically 2X, by making both a button and a balltop with the game logo. Both of them are available for pre-order.
  • Arcadeshock, Brook and Jasen’s Customs have teamed up to create a pcb board that is able to make an arcade stick compatible with up to 10 retro consoles. With the PS360+ days left behind this board claims to add no lag and to be compatible with the UFB brook board. For ST players this gives us a chance to play console versions of the game with a quality modern stick, specially the Dreamcast version which is usually regarded as the best port of the game. You can pre-order it already.
  • Someone in Japan made a chart showing the order of the CPU opponents you can get based on the character you select. We still haven’t figured out the source so in the meantime we hosted the image temporarily for you to see.

X-News Week #39 (July 16th-22nd, 2018)

North America

  • Don’s arcade hosted a Tournament of Legends III qualifier this weekend in LA. Digital Infamy is the new qualifier who fought against Scuzbucket in the finals. Video | Brackets
  • Monday Night Fightcade had Real Decoy Blanka as the sixth person to earn a spot in the final top 8 that will take place in a few weeks to decide the online Tournament of Legends III qualifier. The winner will receive $1000 to help him go to the finals in Canada. Bracket | Video.
  • Next Level Arcade in New York will be hosting a Tournament of Legends III qualifier with the known 2 Old 2 Furious tournament. It will happen this Saturday and will be streamed by Team Sp00ky. Registration link
  • Kumite in Texas/Low Tier city event is happening this weekend with $600 prize pool in the ST tournament. The stream will be on the Free Play Arcade channel.

Japan

  • The legend Taira Dictator is pretty much inactive these days attending just one or two majors per year. However, the closing announcement of the arcade in his area, Mat Mouse arcade, was a good excuse for him to show up and participate in the farewell tournament. He came back in fashion an took the tournament full of other top active Tokyo players like Kawamata Boxer, MB Boxer, Shu Ken to name a few. As a curiosity, he only counter-picked in the final with new Sagat instead of Dictator.
  • If the comeback of an old legend like Taira wasn’t enough, Pony Zangief also came back to play a long set against Kawasim Dhalsim. The set was recorded in the Daytona Shiki stream (Kanto) after the main weekly event of few weeks ago. [source: Daytona twitch channel]
  • FT5 set between Superstar Boxer and Kazu Deejay (who was visiting from Osaka) hosted at the Space Shuttle arcade (Chubu). The set had a crazy score and turn out that you will have to check for yourself.
  • Gamespot Versus weekly team tournament (Kanto). Kotaka Shoten Guile and KKY Dhalsim (who was visiting from Osaka) were the team captains. Really good performances from Choshu Ken, Kawasim Dhalsim and Abebin Honda. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • Gamespot Versus special weekend tournament (Kanto). They did an East vs West format with the twist of giving each player two chances instead of one. Kawasim and Yakitori were the team captains. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • Game Daytona Shiki weekly tournament (Kanto). With their usual “winner stays on” format. There are always 2 laps. This week’s final is between Kawasim Zangief and Shisho Dictator. [source: Daytona twitch channel]
  • Amipara Technoland monthly tournament (Chugoku). Monthly tournament coming from the very west area of Japan, with some nice editing in the introductions of the players at the beginning of the video. [source: Amipara nico channel]
  • Playland F1R 2on2 tournament (Tohoku). From the remote arcade in the very far north of Japan, unfortunately with no annotations. [source: Playland twitch channel]

Europe

  • Justin Wong won VSFighting, the Tournament of Legends III qualifier run in the UK, which ended up having 48 players participating. The next European qualifier will be in France on August 12. Video | Brackets
  • UK/Ireland will have three more ST upcoming events this summer: NFC (Newcastle) on July 28, SFO (Leeds) on August 12, CT/Celtic Throwdown (Dublin, Ireland) on August 25.
  • Registration list for XSB tournament is filling up. The organizers have announced that the second Japanese invite will be revealed when they reach 40 sign ups. Registration | List of Players
  • Toypad is a store in Marselle (France) who organized an ST event to celebrate their 3rd anniversary with some guest players coming from Spain. Geronimo Ryu, XavieF Zangief and Marcade Honda formed the final top 3. Video

Others

  • Bob Sagat who has been doing top quality combo videos for the last years has surpassed himself with probably one of the most elaborate and spectacular videos to date. The video is also full of hacks and tricks that can be performed in-game and even on the character selection screen. Video
  • James Chen has published another video of his series called “FGC History: SF 30th Collection Retrospective”. It’s the 4th part he dedicates to Super Turbo going character by character. In this episode he goes extensively through FeiLong, T. Hawk and DeeJay.
  • Fromo published a video on his channel where he compares the speed between 30AE (on PS4) and the CPS2. One of the final conclusions is that setting the game to Turbo 1 (speed 2 in the menu) will be the closest speed to arcade (the tournament standard is T2 for US version and T3 for Japanese version). However, this speed can’t be changed on online mode which is fixed to Turbo 2.
  • Vega is now available for pre-order at BigBoysToys (with free shipping worldwide) as part of the TNC series collection. It will be released in August.

X-News Week #38 (July 9th-15th, 2018)

North America

  • The classic 2 Old 2 Furious has joined the Tournament of Legends III tour as a qualifier for July 28. It will be taking place at Next Level Arcade and will be streamed by Team Sp00ky
  • Top 8 and finals of CEO have been posted in the official Capcom channel for those who want to revisit the incredible moments of the tournament including the unexpected ones.
  • Monday Night Fightcade had x64 as the fifth person to earn a spot in the final top 8 that will take place in a few weeks to decide the online Tournament of Legends III qualifier. Bracket | Video.
  • IFixMachine had their usual series of casuals streamed in their channel. This week you can see TechMonkey playing against his brother. Video

Japan

  • One of the worst news we have to give since X-News started is that Mat Mouse arcade in Tokyo will be closing its doors on July 22. That saddens us for so many reasons. Some players who have travelled there in the last years have been able to live the magic of that arcade. The arcade is located in the Yokohama area of Tokyo and unfortunately did have very little presence online. Last time we had to hear such bad news was when Game Off arcade closed in 2013. There are few farewell tournaments organized these days for the arcade, while we prepare the videos you can watch a casuals session that was run on the weekend with some top players involved (see video annotations).
  • Now seems to be a good time precisely to publish a long set between Mattsun Ken vs Shu Ken played at Mat Mouse arcade back in January that no one has seen before. Get ready to see a lot of fancy combos and fancy juice kicks.
  • Speaking of arcades, for those re-visiting Japan, HEY arcade has changed the location of the ST cabinets. They are still on the second floor but closer to the central area instead of next to the escalators. Remember to check the list of arcades to visit if you are going to Japan.
  • X-EST is the next major in Japan (formerly known as X-Mania) which will be on August 11. Few teams are already listed in the official spreadsheets. There you can see some stacked teams like Opemai/Yondaime/Fujimon or Kotaka/Mattsun/Tsuji. Riz0ne is one of the few visitors that will attend and he has already teamed up with VIPER and AFO. It’s getting hype.
  • FT5 set between Kusa ChunLi and Sasori Ryu at Gamespot Versus (Kanto). This set was played on April 28, the same day they run a longer session between them that we published few weeks ago.
  • Gamespot Versus weekly team tournament (Kanto). Yuuvega Dictator and Yakitori Hawk were the team captains this week. A few nice highlights worth mentioning: Choshu beating 3 claws in a row at 57:23. Epic battle between Kawasim Dhalsim and Nakamura (aka Takechi) Cammy at 01:06:44. Yakitori being Yakitori. [source: GSV youtube channel]
  • In Tokyo, Gamespot Versus has been running the weekly team tournament on Tuesdays (called East vs. West) for more than 10 years. It has been religiously posted and annotated by the community to make it more accessible to everyone. This year in Osaka, Shogatsu started doing the same every Monday and posting it on his youtube channel. We realized the content is also amazing and it deserves more credit than we have been giving it so far. We want to start the efforts to make it accessible as well and we placed full annotations as the first comment in this week’s video. The format is slightly different as they run two laps, in the first lap most players use their alt characters (this week you can strangely see a lot of Old Ryus and even an Old Deejay and an Old Dictator). Besides all the big names in Osaka you can also see some guests from Tokyo like Palestina or PECO. You can also give Shogatsu some love with likes and subscriptions to his channel.
  • Gamespot Versus special tournament (Kanto). With one of those strange formats they come up every week. This time it’s a double bracket 2on2 tournament where players can’t use a character if they have been beaten with him before.
  • Game Newton Ooyama team tournament (Kanto). This time with a 5vs5 team format but with a single bracket and NOT character lock. The teams are mostly very top players. Incredible performances coming from Munari Old Sagat, Hiroyan Hawk, Kikai Guile and Shiki Boxer among others.
  • Game Daytona Shiki weekly tournament (Kanto). With their usual “winner stays on” format. There are always 2 laps. This week’s final is between Kawasim DeeJay and Tsunoppi Cammy.
  • An early publication of the most recent Game Daytona Shiki weekly tournament (Kanto). The final is between Hatenko Ryu and Yonezaki Dhalsim.
  • Playland F1R 2on2 tournament (Tohoku). From the remote arcade in the very far north of Japan, unfortunately with no annotations.

Europe

  • The second European Tournament of Legends III qualifier was run on Sunday at Gamespirit in Lyon. There were 26 players participating coming from France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, etc. The final was between the two Italian Biollo Dhalsim and SpinalBlood New Sagat. Biollo ended up taking it and is the new ToL3 qualifier. To make it more accessible the organizers made most of the stream in English. VideoBrackets
  • On Saturday night, there was a pre-event to the qualifier in Lyon where players tried a different format for fun similar to Starcup format but not quite the same. Players had to choose 3 characters to play, the winner of the match (instead of the loser) was forced to change characters which means that in order to beat your opponent you have to be at least decent with 3 characters. The final was between Zarghatt and DonYann. Video | Brackets

  • Capcom announced the official release date for 30th anniversary in Japan. The game will contain the Japanese versions of the game. 2X instead of ST, Zero instead of Alpha, etc. What’s still not clear is if the online play will be in ST so there can be a cross play between continents. As a funny note, they used a logo of ST with the subtitle “The Ultimate Championship”. This is a funny mistake since the subtitle was available only in the beta version of the game but removed it in the final version (although the graphics of the subtitle were never removed from the ROM) and it’s used in some console versions.
  • Loïc Petit has published some interesting tests about the 30th Anniversary input lag. His approach and method seems to be a little bit more accurate than previous attempts and he is polishing it thanks to the feedback from the community. There might be even possible that he applies the same tests to a CPS2 so we can see the comparison soon.

Also, please check out the TOURNAMENT OF LEGENDS III fundraiser athttps://www.gofundme.com/legends3 to help support ST Revival with tournament expenses and pick up some awesome Super Turbo related goodies in the process. If you can’t swing a full donation for one of the prizes, a small donation of even a couple of dollars is still greatly appreciated! The next Japanese invite will be unlocked at $1950!
